She comes from a community where women are seen as “second class citizens,” having no opinion in the things that affect them directly. Growing up in a village of Northern Nigeria she had experienced the fear of facing problems that seem hopeless and she has seen other women struggle to overcome abuse. It is sad and frustrating to see. After completing 11 short films, she decided to dedicate her first feature to a cause close to her heart – violence against women.
The Movie Tarmun translates to “our pain” in my language and the film tells the story of three women, trying to find love, trying to escape from love and trying to make love work but are faced with domestic violence and forced child marriage. Its three women interconnected by the dark social issues they are forced to face in their societies.
